A union is about power...
not power over the company...
power over YOU.

All labor unions, including APWU, are required by the federal government to prepare constitutions that establish the union's organizational and financial structure as well as the various rules and regulations by which the union intends to govern its members. These "constitutions" are actually rulebooks, which become binding on all new members of any union.

The APWU constitution contains approximately 57 pages of rules and regulations that are absolutely binding on you if you voluntarily join APWU (or are involuntarily forced to join under a negotiated union shop clause). We think you should have the opportunity to carefully review this document to determine if these are the rules and regulations that you want to abide by.

But the APWU made sure its’ constitution takes even better care of it’s officers and employees than it does of it’s members.

Article 7 establishes the salaries for the union president: “$128,129.87, plus necessary expenses.” And the Executive Vice President? “$111,642.26.” The Secretary Treasurer gets the same.

Article 8 goes on to name the salaries of the Industrial Relations Department Director and the Director of the Legislative Department, both set at $101,772.08.
The establishment of salaries goes on and on for over 10 pages, making sure every officer and employee has their salary guaranteed in writing.

Article 19, section 2 states:

“Whenever postal employees are granted a pay increase, the same percentage increase… shall automatically accrue to all paid National Officers of the APWU.

And section 3 of Article 19 outlines how much time off they can take: “All officers and full-time appointed representatives shall be allowed thirty (30) days annual leave with such sick leave as may be necessary. And if they don’t take that time off, they can roll it to future years or be paid for it!

Who wrote this constitution? Not you. But you're the ones who will have to obey every article, section and subsection...or face a hearing – if you don’t appear at your hearing, they can force you to stand trial Local union members can file charges against their own members, try them, convict them and punish them with reprimands, fines, suspensions, expulsions, revocations of charters and more.
